How to Create Sturdy Gypsum Containers

Creating sturdy gypsum containers is a rewarding DIY project that combines creativity and functionality. This guide will take you through each step needed to make your own gypsum containers, ensuring they are both hard and smooth.

Materials Needed

Before you begin, gather the following materials:

  • Gypsum powder
  • Gypsum liquid
  • Pigment powder (optional)
  • Silicone molds
  • Water (for mixing)
  • Electronic scale
  • Scraper
  • Wooden stick
  • Paper cup
  • Gypsum defoamer

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Materials

Ensure you have all your materials ready. You will need gypsum powder, gypsum liquid, pigment powder (if desired), and silicone molds.

2. Measure the Gypsum Powder

Weigh out the required amount of gypsum powder. For this project, you will need 100 grams of gypsum powder. Place it in a plastic container.

3. Measure the Pigment Powder

If you wish to add color to your gypsum, weigh out 1 gram of pigment powder and mix it with the gypsum powder.

4. Mix the Pigment Powder

Seal the plastic container and shake it well or use a wooden stick to ensure the pigment powder is evenly distributed. Make sure there are no clumps.

5. Add Gypsum Liquid

Place the mixed gypsum powder and pigment powder on the electronic scale and reset it to zero. Add 40 grams of gypsum liquid.

  • Recommended Ratio: For the best results, use a ratio of 100g of gypsum to 40g of CW gypsum liquid. If the total weight needed for the mold is approximately 100g, the mixture should consist of 71.5g of gypsum and 28.5g of CW gypsum liquid.

Note: After adding the gypsum liquid, you may notice an increase in bubbles. It is advisable to add a small amount of gypsum defoamer (0.3-1%) to reduce the bubbles.

6. Mix the Gypsum Powder

Using a scraper or wooden stick, stir the mixture until it forms a fluid dough-like consistency.

Tip: Since no water has been added yet, mixing may feel difficult. You can add a small amount of water (not exceeding 20 ml) to get a smoother consistency.

During mixing, you may notice a distinct smell from the gypsum liquid, which will gradually fade as it combines with the gypsum powder and hardens.

7. Pour into Molds

Check your silicone molds for any debris, then pour the prepared gypsum mixture into the molds. Gently tap the molds to help settle the mixture and ensure a smooth surface.

8. Remove Air Bubbles

Gently tap the sides of the molds to release any trapped air bubbles. For best results, you can use a pressure method to eliminate bubbles from the surface.

9. Demold

Once the gypsum has completely hardened, carefully remove it from the molds.

10. Use Your Gypsum Containers

The addition of gypsum liquid will make your containers particularly sturdy and smooth. Once fully set, these containers can be used to hold candles, enhancing their aesthetic appeal.

Conclusion

Making sturdy gypsum containers is an enjoyable DIY project suitable for crafters of all levels. By following these steps, you can create beautiful, functional pieces that showcase your creativity. Gather your materials and start your crafting journey today!
